One of the most alarming aspects of smart meters is their association with health risks, primarily due to electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure from wireless transmissions. The cumulative effect of these signals—pulsing at high frequencies—disrupt biological processes, leading to numerous health problems.

Key health issues linked to smart meter EMF exposure include:

Headaches and Sleep Disturbances: Many users report chronic headaches and insomnia after installation. A 2011 study by the University of Melbourne found correlations between RF exposure and disrupted sleep patterns, potentially due to interference with melatonin production.

Cardiovascular Problems: Research from the University of Bristol in 2010 indicated that pulsed RF signals affects heart rate variability, increasing risks of arrhythmias.

Neurological Effects: Symptoms like dizziness, memory loss, and cognitive impairment are common. A 2012 report from the BioInitiative Working Group, involving scientists from universities like Harvard and Yale, highlighted how non-thermal EMF exposure leads to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Immune System Suppression: Prolonged exposure weakens immunity, making individuals more susceptible to infections. Studies from the University of Vienna in 2015 linked RF radiation to reduced white blood cell counts.

Cancer Risks: Evidence point to increased cancer incidence. The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified RF EMFs as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" in 2011, based on data from multiple universities.

Reproductive Health Issues: Fertility problems, including reduced sperm count and miscarriages, have been reported. A 2014 study from the University of Exeter noted associations between EMF exposure and reproductive disorders.

  These health problems add up threateningly because smart meters operate continuously, unlike intermittent devices like cell phones. In homes with multiple meters or in apartment buildings, the combined RF load exceeds by far the safe thresholds, leading to chronic conditions. Vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and those with electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), face heightened risks. For instance, a 2016 survey by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine reported that 3-5% of the population experiences EHS symptoms exacerbated by smart meters.

Critics, including Dr. Magda Havas from Trent University, emphasize that FCC guidelines are outdated, based on thermal effects only, ignoring non-thermal biological impacts. This oversight allows cumulative exposure to threaten public health on a large scale.

Beyond health, smart meters raise significant privacy issues by collecting and transmitting detailed personal data. These devices track not just energy usage but also patterns that reveal intimate details about household activities—such as when residents are home, their daily routines, and even appliance usage. This data is sent wirelessly to utility companies and sometimes third-party vendors, creating a digital footprint ripe for any (mis-) use.

Privacy threats include:       

Data Breaches: With millions of meters deployed, hacks could expose sensitive information. A serious 2018 incident in California saw smart meter data leaked, highlighting vulnerabilities.

Surveillance and Profiling: Utilities can sell anonymised data to marketers, leading to targeted advertising. More alarmingly, government agencies might access it for surveillance, as noted in a 2015 report by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Lack of Consent: Consumers often have no say in data collection, violating privacy rights. The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) addresses this, but U.S. laws lag behind.

Cumulative Tracking: Combined with other smart devices, this creates a comprehensive profile. Universities like Stanford have warned about the "internet of things" enabling pervasive monitoring.

The transmission method amplifies privacy risks—unencrypted signals can be intercepted by anyone with basic equipment, turning neighbourhoods into open surveillance zones. This adds up to a broader threat, where individual privacy erodes in the name of efficiency, and the “green” hysteria!

The real-time wireless transmission of "smart meters", the health risks from EMF exposure, and privacy breaches must concern us! From headaches and cancer risks to data breaches and surveillance, the cumulative effects threaten public health and Freedom!
