Health-Economy Risks from Latin American Imports – Mercosur - Thomais de Fois

Imported foods from Latin America conceal serious risks for our domestic production and our health. Will the EU protect us… or will our health be sacrificed on the altar… of German car exports, for example..?

Let's examine this in detail, and I'll start with domestic production, because our health depends directly on it!

Economic Impacts on European Agriculture and the Scandal in Greece

The Mercosur agreement envisages the reduction of tariffs for products such as beef, soy, and grains originating from Latin America, a fact that threatens European agriculture with "collapse". Cheaper imported products will compete intensely with local productions, leading to economic ruin for EU producers. This is due to the lower prices of imports from Latin America, which will increase demand for them, reduce demand for domestic products, and shrink production, resulting in bankruptcies and job losses. Thus, citizens will be forced to feed on the aforementioned imports… and cockroaches!

Yes, they are unhealthy too.

Corruption in Greece

The OPEKEPE scandal led to the refusal to vaccinate animals against smallpox, so that the real numbers of farmed animals (declared by the scoundrels of the Parliament) wouldn't leak to the EU. Instead of vaccinating, they slaughtered about 500,000 farmed animals in a tragic way, destroying breeders and farms.

Besides, with so much corruption, what will happen to the protection of geographical indications (PDO, PGI) and protected products, such as feta, I wonder?

You'll tell me… Israel, Bulgaria, and who knows who else, already circulate Israeli/Bulgarian feta… but nothing's happening…!

Health Problems That Can Arise from Mercosur Imported Foods

Because the stringent checks conducted in the EU are not applied to Mercosur imports, the following health issues are frequently observed.

Salmonella

Causes food poisoning with symptoms such as diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps. It is often found in vegetables, watermelons, and melons. It can lead to serious complications in vulnerable groups. https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/index.html

Listeria

A bacterium found in meat products, causing listeriosis with symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, and in severe cases meningitis or miscarriage in pregnant women. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/listeriosis

Oropouche

Virus (OROV) Viral infection (with 10,000 cases in Brazil in 2024). Causes fever, headaches, and joint pain, and can lead to deaths in healthy adults and problems in pregnancy, such as miscarriage or microcephaly in new-borns.

E. coli (Escherichia coli)

A bacterium that causes gastroenteritis with bloody diarrhoea, cramps, and kidney failure in severe cases (e.g., haemolytic uraemic syndrome). Common in cheeses, milk, green vegetables, cattle, and poultry.

Campylobacter

Causes campylobacteriosis with diarrhoea, fever, and abdominal pain. Common in poultry and eggs.

Shigella

A bacterium that causes dysentery with bloody diarrhoea and fever. Transmitted through contaminated water, food, and exposure to faeces (e.g., contact among gay individuals). https://www.cdc.gov/shigella/index.html

Vibrio

Causes cholera or other infections with diarrhoea and dehydration. Common in seafood. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8278402/

Norovirus

A virus that causes viral gastroenteritis with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. A common cause of epidemics.

Giardia

A parasite that infects the small intestine, causing diarrhoea, cramps, and dehydration. Transmitted through contaminated water or food.

Cyclospora

Causes cyclosporiasis with diarrhoea and fatigue. Common in fruits and vegetables. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9150616/

Toxoplasma

A parasite in meats such as beef, causing toxoplasmosis with symptoms such as fever and fatigue, particularly dangerous for pregnant women. https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/toxoplasmosis/index.html

Taenia (Tapeworm)

A parasite that causes taeniasis with abdominal pain and weight loss. Transmitted through contaminated meat.

Bacillus cereus

A bacterium in rice, causing poisoning with nausea and vomiting. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK459121/

Clostridium perfringens

Causes poisoning with diarrhoea and cramps, common in meats. https://www.cdc.gov/clostridium-perfringens/index.html

Staphylococcus (Staphylococcus aureus)

A bacterium in desserts, cold cuts, and cheeses, causing poisoning with vomiting and diarrhoea. https://www.cdc.gov/staph-food-poisoning/about/index.html

African Horse Sickness (AHSV)

A zoonosis transmitted by Culicoides insects, causing death in horses, donkeys, and zebras. Risk of spread through trade.

Pesticides Banned in the EU but Used in Food Production in Mercosur Countries

Chlorpyrifos

Neurotoxic effects, including developmental delays, reduced IQ, Parkinson's, autism in children, hormonal disorders. Used as an insecticide on fruits (e.g., apples, oranges), vegetables (e.g., tomatoes), and cereals to control pests; residues also in juices, sauces, and cereals.

Year of EU Ban: 2020

Atrazine

Hormonal disorders, reproductive problems, genetic abnormalities, carcinogenicity. Applied as a herbicide on maize and sugarcane crops; residues appear in maize-based products such as tortillas, syrups, and animal feeds that enter the food chain through meat and dairy.

Year of EU Ban: 2004

Paraquat

Acute poisoning, respiratory failure, Parkinson's, and other neurodegenerative disorders, death. Used as a herbicide on crops such as soy and cotton; residues contaminate cereals and oils used in cooking oils, baked goods, and processed foods.

Year of EU Ban: 2007

Food Additives Banned in the EU but Used in Food Production in Mercosur Countries

Titanium Dioxide (E171)

Genotoxicity, DNA damage, carcinogenicity, inflammations, immune system problems. Added as a whitener and colourant in sweets, chewing gum, dairy products, and sauces to improve appearance and texture.

Hormones in Animal Production Banned in the EU but Used in Food Production in Mercosur Countries

Zeranol

Hormone disruptor that mimics oestrogens, cancers of reproductive organs, developmental problems in children, and endocrine disorders. Implanted in cattle to promote faster growth. Found in dairy products, beef, veal, processed burgers, and sausages.

Year of EU Ban: 1988

Trenbolone

Androgenic hormonal effects leading to masculinisation, reproductive toxicity, liver damage, and hormonal cancers. Used in cattle implants for muscle growth. Found in meat products such as steaks and mince.

Year of EU Ban: 1988

Ractopamine

Beta-2 agonist that causes cardiovascular problems (e.g., increased heart rate), tremors, neurotoxicity, hyperactivity, reproductive problems. Added to pig feed to increase lean muscle; residues in pork products such as sausages, bacon, and ham.

 Year of EU Ban: 1990

Antibiotics in Animal Production Banned in the EU but Used in Food Production in Mercosur Countries

Avoparcin

Contributes to antibiotic resistance, leading to untreatable infections such as MRSA (staphylococcus) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci, increasing the risk of superbugs in humans. Added to poultry and pig feed for growth promotion. Found in meat, eggs, dairy, chicken, pork, cheese.

Year of EU Ban: 1997 (initially, 2006 completely)

Virginiamycin

Promotes resistance to related antibiotics (e.g., quinupristin-dalfopristin), risking treatment failures for human infections such as endocarditis. Used in chicken and pig feed. Found in poultry and pork meat.

Year of EU Ban: 1999

Poor Hygiene and Illegal Trade

The RASFF system is the product control system for protecting public health in the EU through direct information exchange between member states, but its effectiveness is threatened by illegality and corruption (such as the OPEKEPE scandal) and the increased volume of imported products, where controls, certifications, and import bans are still weak, especially when the rapid increase in trade doesn't give time to redesign the system to enable data exchange for dangerous products, viruses, etc.

Illegal food trade in the EU already includes the smuggling and distribution of products that bypass controls, such as fake or unfit foods (e.g., meat with banned antibiotics or fruits with excessive pesticides), often through illegal networks from non-EU countries. This undermines our health, creates unfair competition for legal producers, and increases the risk of health crises, such as epidemics from contaminated products.

As for transported insects… autopsy will show…!

*I fear that the EU might relax safety rules for human and domestic animal health, such as with pesticides used in Mercosur countries, which have been banned in the EU for 40 years, with whatever cost that has for our health!! Because, seeing those countries adapt to European standards, won't see even in our dreams..!

Like going backwards, full speed…

*Have you realised how huge is the forests' disaster in Amazon, caused by those crops production? Amazon is responsible even for the climate stability!! And all the forests, of course! And those who are promoting the water shortage now...if they really cared, they'd be planting forests everywhere! They wouldn't be burning them...

Conclusion

We must at all costs support our producers by buying directly from them, quality food!! Pressure is needed to terminate the aforementioned agreement, which is currently on hold. Producers can help with this, and the agreement is taken to EU court.

Boycott all the big markets, and everything that threatens our health!

Although, in my opinion, the situation can only be saved with GREXIT and Direct Democracy!!! With election results produced by a private company of Jewish interests, a crony of the filthy family, we won't be saved either from elections or from romantic saviours.

Orders are given from elsewhere, as we know, and you don't enter this specific system unless you've bowed down!!

Whoever can, return to Nature and produce food!!
